🚤 Grindley Brook Staircase Lock – Llangollen Canal

Grindley Brook is one of the best-known lock features on the Llangollen Canal, located just south of Whitchurch, on the Shropshire/Cheshire border. It’s famous for its three-chamber staircase lock, the only one on the entire canal.

🔧 What It Is

A staircase lock is where the bottom gate of one lock is the top gate of the next.
At Grindley Brook, the three chambers are used sequentially to lift or lower boats through a steep section of the canal.

The full flight at Grindley Brook consists of:

3-rise staircase lock (the main feature)

3 single locks immediately below it

6 locks total, raising/lowering around 39 ft (12 m)

📜 History

Built in the early 1800s as part of the Ellesmere Canal system (later the Llangollen Canal).

Engineer: Thomas Telford, whose design made the canal navigable across the rising terrain.

The staircase was needed because the hillside was too steep for evenly spaced locks.

Historically, this was a busy commercial route carrying slate, coal, and agricultural goods.

Today it’s a key feature of a popular leisure canal, maintained by the Canal & River Trust.

🚦 Operation

Because the locks are interconnected, water control is critical.

In peak season, the staircase is usually supervised by a lock keeper, especially to prevent misuse and water loss.

There are designated times for ascending and descending during busy periods.

Boaters must ensure the chambers are correctly set before entering — often guided by signage or the keeper.

⛴️ Navigation Notes

Boats must wait at the bottom/top until called through.

The staircase can take 20–30 minutes to pass.

It’s narrowboat-only territory (narrow locks).

A services area, water point, and a useful shop/café are located near the top.
